In Memory of Mr. Vincent
J. DeVito (1923-2009) Vince
dedicated his entire career to this nation's nuclear
program, beginning in 1953 at what was then the Goodyear
Atomic plant in Piketon, Ohio, now the Portsmouth Gaseous
Diffusion Plant. He "retired" for the first
time from Goodyear/Martin Marietta in 1989 and became
a consultant to the Office of Security Evaluations,
which is now in the Office of Independent Oversight
within the Office of Health, Safety and Security. Vince
was an expert in material control and accountability
(MC&A) and frequently led the MC&A team on safeguards
and security inspections at DOE sites. He led and participated
in numerous special Departmental studies, including
the 1995 study, "Increasing Fissile Inventory Assurance
within the Department of Energy", which was a precursor
of many of DOE's subsequent consolidation and processing
activities. At 85, he continued to participate in Office
of Independent Oversight inspection activities. As the
Secretary of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management
since 1973 until his passing, Vince used his expertise
also to further the international growth of the Department's
nuclear program and non-proliferation activities.
We will remember Vince as
a giant of a man - witty, gracious, always pleasant,
and extremely intelligent. Our sympathies go out to
his children, his grandchildren, and his many, many
friends. He will truly be missed by many.
