Surface and Volume Contamination

(Questions Posted to ERAD in May 2012)

Will there be volume contamination/activation guides as well as updated contamination guides?

The only guidance being developed for volumetric contamination is a Technical Standard for accelerator facilities. However, a revised version of ANSI N13.12-1999 is expected in the future and it will be assessed to determine its acceptability for use as a pre-approved authorized limit. It is noted that ANSI N13.12-1999 is only applicable to personal property not structures.

Where are the revised surface contamination guidelines planned to be incorporated (new or existing document)?

The following background information is provided to clarify this issue and to identify additional opportunities to meet the requirements of DOE O 458.1.

Although the final decision has not been made yet, the revised surface contamination criteria would most likely be issued in a Technical Standard based on former DOE G 441.1-XX.
