Special Topic: DOE Protective Force - Injury/Illness Reporting

The Office of Health, Safety and Security (HSS) is assessing Protective Force safety because the officers tend to experience higher injury rates than workers in other organizations due to their physical fitness and tactical training requirements. Figure 1 shows FY 2008 Protective Force injury/illness rates by organizations with over 400,000 work hours. Data include all personnel in the organization, not just Protective Force officers. Therefore, the percentage of training injuries for only officers and agents is likely higher than what is shown in the figures. HSS will continue to assess Protective Force data in more detail to provide insights into injury trends.

Definitions of activities at the time of injury:

Routine Duties: Security, Routing Access Control, Emergency Response

Physical Training: Physical Fitness Training, Special/Federal Agent Physical Qualifications

Tactical Training: Force on Force Exercises, Self Defense Training, Weapons/Firearms Training and Qualifications, Combat Training and Qualifications, Explosives Training, Vehicular Pursuit Training

Other: Everything else, including “Unspecified” activities

Note: Obstacle course injuries can be either P/T or T/T depending in the situation.
