DOE COMPLETES ITS NUCLEAR SAFETY WORKSHOP

DOE's 2011 Nuclear Safety Workshop concluded on June 7, 2011. DOE thanks the many nuclear safety managers and technical experts who participated in this workshop.

The recent events impacting the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in Japan demonstrated that, while unlikely, a worst-case scenario event - an event beyond the design basis - is not impossible. Safety is a critical element of the Department of Energy's mission. To ensure that we fully evaluate all available information from our assessment of DOE facilities and the preliminary lessons learned from our continuing review of the Japanese event, Deputy Secretary Poneman (view announcement memo), convened a DOE Nuclear Safety Workshop from June 6-7, 2011, at the Crystal City Marriott, 1999 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, VA.

The workshop was very successful and was an important step as DOE moves forward with lessons learned and actions to improve nuclear safety at DOE. The workshop also laid the groundwork for continuing the dialog and exchange of ideas on improving nuclear safety.
