In June 2008, the Office of Health, Safety, and Security recognized outstanding environmentally
sustainable practices within the Department over the past year, through three environmental
award programs: the Department of Energy's (DOE) Pollution Prevention (P2) Star Awards,
the White House Closing the Circle Awards, and the Federal Electronics Challenge.
Acting Deputy Secretary of Energy Jeffrey Kupfer, along with Chief Information Officer
Thomas Pyke, presided over the award ceremony. Marcus Peacock, EPA Deputy Administrator,
presented DOE with the Federal Electronics Challenge Agency Partner Award, which
recognized DOE's achievements for its leadership in the electronics stewardship during the year.
These exemplary practices and projects have significant savings in operational costs,
worker safety enhancement, and protection of the environment associated with them.
