Personnel Security---Security Clearances (Access Authorizations) Office of Personnel Security, 301-903-5485
- DOE grants "Q" and "L" access authorizations. The chart on the following page explains the types and levels of classified information each allows.
- A "Q" requires a full field background investigation; an "L" requires national agency checks.
- To comply with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), all new DOE and contractor employees must present two forms of identity and are subject to investigation before they can be issued a PIV approved badge.
- Building Access Only (BAO) badges are issued to new hire employees or those employees whose job function does not require an access authorization. This badge gains access to the building only - no security areas.

Because of the significance of the human factor in security vulnerabilities, the Office of Personnel
Security's goal to protect the national security is a critical element in the Department's overall security
strategy. The Office of Personnel Security is committed to assuring the integrity and dependability of
each individual who is granted access authorization.
